Jade Anderson and her pooch Harvey

The first time we sat down with Jade Anderson we just wanted to hear her say anything. Her saucy British accent was refreshing and well--groovy baby! From her super sweet Westie, “Harvey”, to performing live on stage, Jade is clearly passionate about everything she does. Her album Dive Deeper (Columbia Records) is a reflection of her inner soul. It is very personal and offers a lot of wisdom on life, love and friendships, (something all of us girls can relate too). She is humble, talented and full of star quality! GirlSite spotlights cover girl Jade Anderson, a singer who's sure to become a household name.

GirlSite: At what age did you start singing?
Jade Anderson: I started singing around 12 years old and I think I found my voice more around 15. I was probably singing a lot earlier, but I was not aware that I loved music until around 12. When I was 15, kind people started commenting and complementing my voice, and so I decided to take a little more serious. I think I started pretty late though, a lot of people say, “I started when I was two”… but I’m not one of those people.

GirlSite: Have you ever taken singing lessons, or studied music professionally?
Jade Anderson: I studied piano when I was ten and got kicked out of my class because I never practiced, practice does make perfect! I didn’t at all, so I now play by ear. I would have liked to learn to play piano, and I would like to start again now. As far as singing lessons, I was given the opportunity to take singing lessons when I was signed to Columbia Records, so I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing. I think it was just to strengthen my voice because you use it a lot on the road and it’s great, it’s really helpful.

GirlSite: Who were some of your music influences when you were younger and who are they now?
Jade Anderson: When I was younger, my mother played Motown, Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole and just all the greats around the house. For me I think it was such an inspiration, (without me knowing it), because when I started to write music myself, I basically went along with the kind of melodies and lyrical ideas the “old school” singers sang. They were very much my inspiration starting off, but now, anyone who is a good musician, with good melodies, and something to say, is what inspires me; and it’s a whole wide range of music for me. I like soul and R&B to heavy metal.

GirlSite: How would you describe the type of music of you sing, like on your debut album, Dive Deeper?
Jade Anderson: I would describe it as being soulful with elements of pop, very catchy melodies, and lyrics that leave you thinking.

GirlSite: You participated in the Teen People Rock and Shop Mall Tour, what was that experience like? Did it help you become more comfortable on stage?
Jade Anderson: The experience made me a lot more comfortable on stage, I think because after a while I was doing a mall tour every weekend for two and half months, by the end of it I think I was getting too comfortable. It was like, “Oh, an hour to go? Lets just put on some makeup!” Whereas before I was like, “Five hours to go? Let’s start now!” I think the comfort levels change, its nice to be in the middle, where you’re still a little bit nervous at times. But I also think the kids here are kind of fascinated by anything that comes through fuzzled with an English accent. I’d talk about what I’d seen so far in the cities or towns that I’d just gone to, and they were pretty welcoming, and they always danced to the music. So it was great. I wasn’t nervous when I got up on stage and I think that was really helpful.

GirlSite: Do you have any rituals you do right before you go on?

Jade Anderson: I definitely put thought into God, and really think about why I’m doing it, and just ask for that light to shine through and hope for the best.

GirlSite: You recently moved from London, where you grew up, is life completely different here in Los Angeles? How often do you get to go home to visit?
Jade Anderson: Obviously there is a scenic difference, and the heat is apparently all year round. London has seasons, and I did not have to drive in London cause the transport is so good. Here I have to get my driving skills working, I think people have a common something that bonds everybody around the world. I think you just have to find your own comfort zone wherever you go, and just make the best of it wherever you can.

I don’t really like making a plans to go off and visit, but I do special events like “Carnival” in London. It’s amazing! A lot of people from the Caribbean go and celebrate and have this huge street party with tons of music. Its so much fun, and that’s at the end of August. My friends always go there, and I think that is when I’ll go back next, but if that was not happening I’d probably would not think about much, I’m here to work and I cannot think about running back home. I make my homes wherever I go.

Make sure to look at for Jade in the future.

GirlSite: We know you are an amazing singer, but do you have any plans to move into the acting world?
Jade Anderson: I definitely want to move into the acting world. I just feel a strong feeling of, “why limit yourself”? I will look at whatever comes as an oppertunity, and perhaps consider it; I won’t turn it down. So far, I’m in Hollywood and I‘ve had a few offers for some things, but I will concentrate on my singing and writing first, because that’s my love. Hopefully it will move on to other things and it will keep me growing and interested, I love learning.

GirlSite: What are your plans for the future? What are some of your upcoming projects?
Jade Anderson: I’m recording right now, and my album debuted in Japan and did really well, but when it crossed over I felt like I needed some harder songs to come across the radio. I think radio in America is definitely different than the rest of the world. I think that’s why a lot of international acts find it a lot harder to come over, because radio in America is truly what you need to hit, and I’ve been signed as an American artist, so I also need to comply with that. Realizing that my songs probably did not sound sonically as well as they could, I started rerecording some of those songs, and some new stuff and I’m looking just to compile it all together and kind of make my first debut album here. It’s going to take a little time, a few years, well it feels like a few years, I think I’ve been doing it now for three months, and about six more months of work will be good.

GirlSite: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Jade Anderson: In five years, I really don’t know, I would hope to see myself a lot stronger mentally and physically and as I grow as I learn about myself it definitely makes me more comfortable in moving around the people I meet, I think that’s a huge thing for younger people to realize that it does start within, you pretty much have to kind of build yourself. And keep looking inside, and thinking okay am I okay today, and how best can I get over this fear, and I think once you start, like you know, getting over those fears and insecurities you just get a lot more out of life, and a lot more out of yourself. And you achieve a lot more, and I think each day as it comes for the next five years, it would be great to get rid of all of those fears and insecurities, because like all of us, they bombard us everyday, and they stop us from being our true authentic selves.
